It’s not the destination but the journey

You dream about it, you plan for it, you prepare for it. You start research on how much time it’s going to take to get there, how long or how many years it might take. You start to think of how much effort it’s going to take on your part to get prepared to accomplish this GOAL. Now you begin the preparations, the blood, sweat and tears, the hours of mental abuse so that you won’t give up when times get tough, the financial sacrifices that are needed to keep you on mission, to stay the coarse. You wake up and it’s on your mind, “I gotta get this done”, you dream, you pray, you share about it with your friends, you Tweet, you post it on facebook, you make calls or send out emails. This IS the only thing that matters, the GOAL is all that matters. Every day, every night. Time for friends? Later. Time to relax? Not interested! Time to be still, ha! For under-achievers.

The day is closer than ever now, your dream is almost here, you can see it ahead, the excitement after all this time , dreaming, praying, waiting, finally! You start telling yourself, “I can’t wait until I get there”, your climbing, pulling, clawing your way, deep breaths, digging deep, no surrender, no rest, no stopping! Wait, I can see it, there it is straight ahead, can this be? Yes, You made it! This is incredible, you finally made it, you are standing right where you dreamed of standing for so long, it took so much to get you here. You take in the air, you look around, you just want to do nothing, it doesn’t even seem real, mostly because of how HARD and how LONG it took to arrive. A few minutes go by, then they fly by like seconds, life doesn’t wait for you, it never does even if your chasing a dream and now you are faced with two options….stay there, stand there and become part of the past or…move forward, try and conquoer another massive dream that you can see miles and miles away. But you are exhausted now, you haven’t had rest, you don’t even know how to rest, it’s never been important to you, you have no energy, your friends and family seem disconnected with you-but goals and accomplishments are bigger right? The scenery, although amazing, seems to quickly fade because of the stress you are now beginning to face, the weight of moving on is making things very, very blurry and the days and days, hours and hours, years and years, don’t add up to the minutes of joy you just experienced on top because the time it took to get there doesn’t add up to your brief moment standing there.

It never does! Enjoy the ride.

Why? Because life is not about the destination, it’s about the journey.

Never say never

CREATIVITY: Just because you have never tried it before doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Anything worth achieving, worth creating and suffering for will ask you to step out of your comfort zone. Ask yourself what it was like before you understood all the calculated risks? What it was like before safety came along and made things so normal and usual. When you were a starting it up, nothing to lose but just the passion and fire to create, pour into something wonderful, like when you were like a child and all you knew was imagination, you dreamed and you dreamed BIG, you could be anything, any day of the week. Now you find yourself looking at all the reasons why you shouldn’t dream BIG and that’s just the wrong way to think about it.

Get back to the adventure and excitement of creativity, the place where anything is possible first, let the ideas grow, flow and show. Once you get these out in the open you will start to see the passion and energy behind some of them and then you can start to narrow it down to the ones you think are the best. Work on your gifts, your passions, allow your creative fire to fuel your energy and day, bless and give them to others, these were given to you for a reason, life wasn’t intended to be a plain, calculated, usual, normal 9-5 assignment, stored away in a folder. So try your best to stop looking at the clock on the wall and dig into what makes you feel alive, makes you feel like you matter, because you are here for a reason, a creative reason. Give it a go!

My Birthday reflections 2011

Top ten things I’ve learned this year so far.

1. Don’t be in a rush to fix things, that’s God’s job.

2. Time with God is more valuable than anything this world can possibly think or offer, better than money, influence, possessions, recognition, fame & a mansion on Star Island.

3. The more time I spend with my wife I kids, the more I grow closer to the man God has made me to be.

4. My list of books every year keeps getting bigger and bigger.

5. With responsibility comes the truth that knowledge does not come with wisdom, wisdom is application of maturity, putting into practice what God has taught me.

6. Grace, I’ve finally learned to live and walk in grace after all these years and it’s awesome.

7. I have accepted things about myself that I never had before, things from my childhood and upbringing that have given me great peace and clarity, for years they were buried but God has opened my eyes & ears and begun to work, he is faithful to complete his work.

8. I laugh at myself often, I still take my job seriously but laugh at myself more often.

9.  Honor your leaders and learn how to follow well, being a servant is the highest calling we have as Christ followers, Jesus proved this best we he chose to carry that cross and uttered these words “not my will be done, but yours oh Lord“. There is no greater task in life than learning how to follow well!

10. Humility is understanding that my way  may NOT be the best way, my approach may NOT be the best approach, my ideas are NOT the best ideas and that I am here to serve others before myself. I must decrease, I must decrease, Jesus must Increase and I must continue to decrease.
